How to Price Handmade Items (Without Undercharging)

July 20, 2026

The most common mistake new Etsy sellers make is pricing off gut feel — usually too low. Here’s a formula that pays you properly and survives Etsy’s fees.

The formula

(Materials + Labour + Overhead) × Markup = Price

Then check that the price still profits after Etsy takes its cut.

1. Materials

Everything that goes into one finished item: raw materials, packaging, labels, the little thank-you card. Add it all up per unit.

2. Labour — pay yourself

This is the step people skip, and it’s why they burn out. Put a real hourly rate on your time and multiply by how long one item takes. If a piece takes 30 minutes and you value your time at $20/hour, that’s $10 of labour — a real cost, even though it doesn’t leave your bank account.

3. Overhead

A slice of the costs that aren’t tied to one item: tools wearing out, software subscriptions, a portion of your electricity. A rough per-item estimate is fine.

4. Markup

Multiply your total cost by a markup to cover profit and the fees ahead. 2× (a 100% markup) is a common starting point; distinctive or in-demand work can go higher. Markup is what turns “covering costs” into “running a business.”

Don’t forget Etsy’s cut

Here’s the trap: you can hit your target markup and still lose money, because Etsy takes ~10–15% on top. Always sanity-check the final price after fees. The Handmade Pricing Calculator does the whole formula and then subtracts Etsy’s 2026 fees, showing the profit you actually keep. To model a specific order in detail, use the Etsy Fee & Profit Calculator.

Worked example

  • Materials: $8
  • Labour: 30 min @ $20/hr = $10
  • Overhead: $2
  • Total cost: $20
  • Markup 2× → Price: $40
  • Etsy fees on $40 ≈ $4.25 → Profit ≈ $15.75 (about a 39% margin)

That’s a healthy, sustainable price. Halve it to “compete” and you’re working for free.

Know your break-even

Pricing per item is half the picture; you also need enough sales to cover fixed monthly costs (subscriptions, ads). The Break-even Calculator shows how many sales you need each month before you’re actually in profit.

The mindset shift

Handmade buyers on Etsy are paying for craft, not for the cheapest option. Price for the value and the time you put in. Undercharging doesn’t win more sales — it just wins you exhausting, unprofitable ones.
