US Letter vs A4: Sizing Printables for Buyers Worldwide
July 20, 2026
One of the quietest causes of printable returns and bad reviews is size. A buyer in the US prints your file and the edges get cut off; a buyer in Europe gets a white border. The culprit is almost always US Letter vs A4.
The two standards
- US Letter — 8.5 × 11 inches (216 × 279 mm). The default in the United States and Canada.
- A4 — 210 × 297 mm (8.27 × 11.69 inches). The default almost everywhere else in the world.
They’re close, but not the same. A4 is a bit narrower and taller than Letter. So a design built for Letter, printed at 100% on A4, loses a sliver off the sides and leaves extra space at the bottom — and vice versa.
Why it matters for Etsy sellers
Etsy is a global marketplace. If your printable is Letter-only, every A4 buyer has a slightly awkward print — and some will ask for a refund or leave a note in a review. It’s a small detail that quietly costs you.
The fix: offer both (it’s easier than it sounds)
The best-reviewed printable shops almost always include both a US Letter and an A4 file in the download. It signals professionalism and removes the single most common complaint.
If you only want to make one:
- Design at US Letter, and
- Tell buyers to select “Fit to page” (or “Shrink to fit”) when printing on A4. It scales down cleanly and leaves a small, even border — perfectly acceptable.
Check what you actually have
Not sure which size your PDF is? Drop it into the PDF Page Size Checker — it reads the file and tells you whether it’s US Letter, A4, or a custom size, in inches and millimetres. If you’re building a new design and want to work out pixel dimensions for a given size, the Print Size Calculator does that too.
Quick reference
